To obtain a Class 1 driver’s licence, drivers must complete rigorous training. On March 1, 2019, the Alberta government enacted Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) to improve road safety by requiring that Class 1 (tractor-trailer) and Class 2 (bus) drivers receive sufficient training before taking their driver’s licence test. The Experience and Equivalency test may be taken by drivers with a Class 3 driver’s licence and two or more years of experience operating Class 3 commercial vehicles.
